An SPO calendar shows when each parent has the children under a Texas standard possession order. For parents living 100 miles or less apart, the parent with possession gets weekends starting at 6 p.m. on the first, third and fifth Friday of each month until 6 p.m. Sunday, plus Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 p.m. during the school year (Texas Family Code § 153.312(a)). Holidays, spring break and summer follow their own rules and replace these days.

Here are the weekend Fridays for 2027:

Month Weekends start on Friday Fifth weekend?
January 1, 15, 29 Yes
February 5, 19 No
March 5, 19 No
April 2, 16, 30 Yes
May 7, 21 No
June 4, 18 No
July 2, 16, 30 Yes
August 6, 20 No
September 3, 17 No
October 1, 15, 29 Yes
November 5, 19 No
December 3, 17, 31 Yes

The count goes by Fridays in the month, not weekends, so a weekend that starts on the last Friday of a month belongs to that month. Summer possession and holidays override many of these dates. We checked § 153.312 on November 7, 2026.

Weekends start on the first, third and fifth Fridays this month. Holidays, spring break and summer possession in your order replace these days and aren't shown.

January 2027 starts on a Friday, so it has five Fridays: weekends start on January 1, 15 and 29, and Thursday visits fall on the 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th. The calendar doesn't add holidays, spring break or summer. Your own order controls, so check its wording against this.

Spring break and summer

Under § 153.312(b), the standard order also gives the parent with possession:

  • spring break in even-numbered years;
  • 30 days in the summer, chosen by written notice by April 1. Without notice, it's July 1 to July 31.

The other parent has summer rights of their own in the same section, with their own notice deadlines. Your order spells out the dates and notice rules.

Holidays

Thanksgiving, Christmas, the child's birthday, Mother's Day and Father's Day have their own rules in § 153.314, and they replace the regular weekends. Thanksgiving and the two halves of the Christmas break alternate between the parents by even and odd years. Mark them on your calendar first, then fill in the regular weekends.

The expanded order

Under § 153.317, the parent with possession can choose an expanded schedule, where weekends start when school lets out on Friday and end when school resumes on Monday, and the Thursday visit becomes overnight. It must be elected by the deadline in the statute, and the court can deny it if it isn't in the child's best interest.

When the SPO doesn't fit

Parents can agree to a different schedule, such as a 50/50 plan, and the court will usually approve it if it's in the children's best interest. For more than 100 miles apart, § 153.313 sets different weekend and holiday rules. See our guide to the 2-2-5-5 custody schedule for a common 50/50 alternative.
